I was born in Tebing Tinggi, a little town near
Medan (Sumatra, Indonesia), at 7 o'clock in the evening on the 9th of April
1951. I lived happily in the bush (my father was a planter) but at the age of
six I had to go to a boarding-school in Medan, which wasn't a pleasant
experience. In 1960 we moved to Italy (the city of Catania in Sicily) because
of the foreigners policy of the Indonesian government. In Italy I finished my
primary school en started secondary school. In 1965 we moved again, this time
to Nieuwkoop, a small village in the Netherlands.
After finishing secondary
school I left home to fulfil military service, which was obligatory at the
time. I served one and a half years as a sergeant. In September 1972 I left the
service and went to study physics at the University of Groningen, as 'advised'
by my father. I soon realised the subject wasn't interesting enough for me and
took up psychology at the University of Amsterdam. At secondary school I did
very well in biology (I had the highest mark you could get at an exam - a 10)
but because of my passion for understanding the way we think and the way we
interact with each other, I chose psychology instead of biology.
Besides
studying, I helped my father at his factory in producing industrial ducting and
read different books on philosophy. My favourites at the time were Locke, Kant
and Nietzsche. I also followed courses in programming: Algol, Cobol, Fortran
and Pascal. I got my master's degree in 1982 with a specialisation in research
methods and statistics.
My first job was at the faculty of Social
Sciences at the University of Amsterdam where I worked for a year as a
statistician/methodologist.
After this period I had the following
jobs:
¤| my own firm in market research (for about 5 years,
mainly in the library
sector)
¤| data analyst
and informatics consultant (3 years, at a health care
institute)
¤| informatics consultant and manager (3 years, at a
health care insurance
company)
¤| business
administrator and informatics and human resources project manager
(last 15 years, Academic Medical Centre
Amsterdam).
In 2008 I started and finished a course in Change
management at the Free University of Amsterdam.
Between 1982 and 2009 I
have followed different courses:
¤| marketing
strategy
¤| business administration
¤|
informatics
¤| project management
¤|
economics
¤| financial management
¤| planning
& control in human resources
¤| personal
influence.
I have also taught myself programming in Excel,
(Visual)Basic, Clipper, FileMakerPro, (X)HTML, Javascript en
PHP.
